Buenos Aires, Argentina With its unique mix of European and South American cultures, and a native passion for dance (tango, baby!), the Argentine capital provides fertile ground for lively nightlife. There’s an emphasis on fashion and a diverse range of entertainment in Buenos Aires‘ barrios (districts). Relax at a swingin’ jazz club or dance all night by the waterfront; some clubs and cultural centres offer classes so you can learn to tango or salsa like (and with) a local. Variety is huge – there’s everything from Irish pubs and local folk to industrial-strength house parties. Come in October for both the world tango festival and the international guitar festival.

Thessaloniki, Greece

Greece’s second city has style, with plenty of fashionable shops and salons and a 1-million-strong population fleshed out by a big university (80,000-plus students). Thessaloniki boasts great nightlife during those long months when more famous Greek destinations are deep in hibernation, from arty cafes to Latin bars; from discos pumping out house music to salacious bouzoukia (clubs featuring twangy, Eastern-flavoured Greek folk-pop). That’s plenty to keep you occupied after you’ve traversed the city’s sublime Byzantine churches, museums and scattered ruins. It’s not cheap, but no Greek city save Athens compares.

La Paz, Bolivia

Don’t forget that liquor goes to the head quickly in the Bolivian capital, which well over 3000m above sea level. Get hot and sweaty on a chilly Andean night in one of many slick nightclubs, which cater to chic locals and the foreign contingent. The natives are friendly and, with a steady stream of travellers, it’s a town of many tongues. World-class bars, swank cafes and restaurants serenading with traditional Bolivian music round out the offerings. Buy traditional Aymara herbs at the Witches’ Market (Mercado de Brujas) to ward off hangovers and bothersome spirits.

Cape Town, South Africa

With the 2010 World Cup bringing a global audience to South Africa, the partying will only get harder as travellers converge on a city already well known for nightlife. Luxuriate on some of the world’s best beaches by day and kick back under the moonlight at suave cocktail bars by night. Two hours east, in the Indian Ocean, lies the elegant beach village of Mossel Bay, with more great beaches and chic flair. Visitors must try some of the wines crafted by South Africa’s world-renowned vintners, either at a Cape Town bar or at one of several wineries nearby.

Baku, Azerbaijan

Since the 1990s, when it started taking off as a hub for Caspian Sea oil and gas, Baku has been transformed. It’s left its former existence as communist backwater to become a buzzing hive of Western capitalism – all without forsaking the indigenous delights of its Turkic traditions. And this newfound economic stimulation hasn’t failed to influence urban nightlife. The cash injection from energy projects, enhanced by the presence of thousands of international oil workers and wealthy consultants, has turned Baku into an oasis of excess in an otherwise fairly traditional Muslim country. You’ll find the best bars, clubs and restaurants around Fountain Square.

Auckland, New Zealand

Myriad cafes, bars and dinner clubs cater to a hip young clientele. Try the glittering waterfront for smart bars, and hit the happening clubs (some stay open 24 hours). There are plenty of live shows on offer too, from folk in Devonport to louder sounds at Mt Eden. If you don’t get drunk, you can always walk off the Sky Tower – the southern hemisphere’s tallest structure – a 328m cable-controlled drop in which jumpers reach a speed of 85kmh.

Tel Aviv, Israel

Like elsewhere in the greater Mediterranean, Israel’s capital of fun gets going late. The endless bars, pubs and cocktail venues start to fill up by midnight, from which point the nightclubs get revved up with dancing till dawn. Nowadays an international crowd joins native Israelis for a mixed bag of funk, pop, house and techno (in addition to live shows small and large) at the city’s dozens of entertainment hotspots. Tel Aviv has a relaxed, hedonistic air, and prides itself on being gay-friendly and outgoing.

Several islands are part of the city, notably Alcatraz, Treasure Island, and the adjacent Yerba Buena Island. It is also well known for the mesmerizing architecture the Golden Gate Bridge.
This particular city is all about life. This city has got it all and is well depicted by the words of Herb Caen, columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, “One day if I do go to heaven…I’ll look around and say, ‘It ain’t bad, but it ain’t San Francisco.’” This is the city for you. The city has its roots in its rich traditional culture and with that it is finding its future with the gigantic growth in terms of business & commerce and other such areas.

While in the city you will never think of what to do. With so much attractions like the Alcatraz, the Golden Gate bridge, Almo Square. Te Bay Bridge, beautiful beaches, fisherman’ wharf and the never ending nightlife and events in the city will keep you well occupied throughout the day. If that’s not all, you can stroll through the famous union square doing nothing.
Its name is derived from the one-block park situated between Post, Geary, Powell and Stockton Streets, but its importance as the largest collection of large department stores, swank boutiques, tourist trinket shops and salons in the Western United States continues to make Union Square a major visitor draw and downtown San Francisco a vital, cosmopolitan place. Grand hotels and small inns, and repertory, off-Broadway and single-act theaters contribute to the area’s dynamic, 24-hour character.

With the hotels in-house Petit Theater showing free San Francisco-based movies and its close proximity to everything this thrilling city has to offer, Hotel Bijou is the coolest and most convenient of the San Francisco vacation accommodations. The staff was wonderful, the rooms were spacious for a San Francisco hotel, and we could not beat the price or the proximity to all of San Francisco’s attractions.

Tasman, New Zealand
A giant boot that couples can sleep in
When Steve and partner Judy first created The Boot in 2001 they were considered slightly crazy, but after several years history of happy visitors they are rightly taking their place as local celebrities and contributing to the tapestry of attractions and folklore of this inspiring region.
Creating a giant boot guesthouse on a 6 acre property is perhaps the genius of an eccentric, and rather than convert an existing building, Steve Richards designed The Boot from scratch.
With curved walls and ceilings, everything had to be custom fitted into carefully planned spaces. The result is an unusual, romantic hideaway – in the shape of a giant boot
Sweeden
The original ICEHOTEL
“Imagine a hotel built from thousands of tons of snow and ice, and re-built every winter” – that is ICEHOTEL in the little village of Jukkasjârvi in northern Lapland, Sweden.
History
This is the original ICEHOTEL, first created in the early 1990’s. It has become the global ambassador for this genre and now licenses ICEBARs around the world too. With 80+ rooms and suites, the property is a huge undertaking to be rebuilt every year, and their expertise inspired other similar properties in North America (Hotel du Glace Quebec) and elsewhere.
The ICEHOTEL offers two types of accommodation: bedrooms or suites. In both cases you sleep on a bed made of ice covered with an insulating sheet and reindeer skins. The ambient temperature is minus 5 degrees celcius – so it’s chilly inside, but much warmer than outside, where temperatures drop to minus 15 or more. Inside the room is a warm sleeping bag, however heed the advice of what to wear in bed closely.

Many guests keep on too many clothes in bed, get too hot(!), perspire! and spend the rest of the night in a cold, soggy sleeping bag.
Facilities
The hotel offers the famous and indispensable ABSOLUT ICEBAR JUKKASJÄRVI, open to non-residents, as well as an ice chapel sought out by some couples as a likely venue to get married. Of the two restaurants near the hotel, we strongly recommend the one furthest away: It is in a much more charming setting and the walk (15 mins) is very pleasant.
Cottonwood, Idaho
The worlds largest Beagle, offering unique accommodation inside it’s 2 story body.
Sleep in a dog!
This whimsical B+B offers two fantastic connected rooms in a one-of- kind wooden dog. Even the toilet is disguised as a fire hydrant!!
With the two big dogs signaling your arrival to Dog Bark Park visitors may walk the grounds, browse the gift shop and artists’ studio featuring the whimsical chainsaw artwork of husband and wife artists Dennis and Frances. Canine carvings are a specialty although visitors are apt to find fish, feline, bear, moose and Lewis & Clark themed carvings as well. At Dog Bark Park the artists enjoy sharing dog, travel and life stories as well as assisting visitors in planning their vacations.
Dennis J. Sullivan, a self-taught chainsaw artist, has been carving for over twenty years. Frances joined him fifteen years ago and has also learned chainsaw carving. Their “big break” came in 1995 when carvings were sold on QVC television. They did nothing but carve wooden dogs for 18 months (their children barely remember seeing them during those days!). They made what seemed like a bundle of money, invested it all in developing and building Dog Bark Park where visitors most likely will find them happily creating art until, like the pine they use, life returns them to the earth.
At Dog Bark Park they specialize in creating folk-art style wooden canine carvings. Dennis and Frances create over 60 different breeds and poses of dogs and often work from customer’s photos to create carvings in the likeness of their canine companions.
Dubbed the “Redneck Riviera” by dismissive northerners, northwest Florida, in fact, contains some of the most diverse recreation choices along Florida’s drastically under-appreciated Gulf coast, and some of the best options for visitors seeking an affordable family vacation. From Destin to the west, where you can hire a fishing or sailing charter, to the smattering of National Seashores as you move east, there’s really something for everyone. You’ll also find old-school Florida towns with funky shops, tiny hotels, pristine beaches, and the perfect cottage to rent.

BULGARIA

Long mooted as the cheaper alternative to its nearby neighbors in the Euro zone, Bulgaria has become the Eastern European country to watch in terms of a cheaper beach holiday. It has some fine beaches along its Black Sea coast, and Sofia, the capital, is one of the oldest cities in Europe. Most currencies measure up well against the Bulgarian leva, leaving you more in your pocket, and you can also quite easily snap up a cheap flight from almost anywhere in Europe.

Kerala, India

Far from the crowds and seeming chaos of India’s megacities, the coastal state of Kerala is a welcome respite filled with tranquil moments and some of the country’s best food. Kerala, located on the south-western tip of India, enjoys unique geographical features that have made it one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in Asia. Fondly referred to as ‘God’s Own Country’, Kerala was selected by the National Geographic Traveller as one of the 50 destinations of a lifetime and one of the thirteen paradises in the world.

An equable climate, serene beaches, tranquil stretches of backwaters, lush hill stations and exotic wildlife are the major attractions of this land. A unique advantage of Kerala is that most of the destinations here are only a two – four hour drive from the other.

____________________________________________________________________________________

Melbourne, Australia

You can’t help but fall in love with this southern city that boasts a vibrant cultural scene, a sports crazy population, and culinary indulgences aplenty. While not getting as much international tourism or media attention as its northern neighbor Sydney, Melbourne’s sublime appeal lies in its laid-back attitude, its distinctive cosmopolitan flavor, and a rich calendar of events from Formula 1 to comedy festivals. The center of the city is a great starting point with Victorian architectural gems; myriad hidden lane ways; and hole-in-the-wall shops, bars and restaurants. Venture bayside to St. Kilda for a roller-blade along the beach, a slice of cake on Acland Street, and some serious people-watching, or head to funky Fitzroy for more fine food, art galleries, and nightlife. Make sure to drag yourself away from the city itself and explore the coastline along the rugged Great Ocean Road, one of the world’s best road trips.

____________________________________________________________________________________

ICELAND

Have you always wanted to discover this magical country with its ice caps, volcanoes and hot springs, but been put off by the prohibitive prices? Well, 2010 is your year. Last year’s dramatic collapse of the kronur against numerous currencies, including the British pound and the US dollar, made Iceland suddenly much, much more affordable.

____________________________________________________________________________________

Isles of Scilly, England

Call them the Isles of Scilly, or just Scilly, England’s smallest official “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty” lies sprinkled in the Atlantic 28 miles southwest of Land’s End. Scilly is an administrative part of Cornwall (owned, in fact, by the Duchy of Cornwall) easily accessible by boat, helicopter, or plane from the mainland. The islands are a collection of secluded sandy beaches, Bronze Age burial chambers, and rocky promontories, and a smattering of beautifully located cafés ensure plenty of diversions — such as kayaking, sailing, and windsurfing — en route. There are five inhabited islands: St. Mary’s, Tresco, St. Martin’s, St. Agnes, and Bryher, along with more than 150 uninhabited ones that lay scattered across the shallow turquoise seas. Fringed with beaches of soft, pale sand, the archipelago has the exotic appeal of some faraway holiday paradise, an impression enhanced by the balmy, frost-free climate and colorful subtropical plants. While the sometimes harsh winters scare people off, summers do anything but: You’re advised to book well ahead as Scilly’s limited accommodations are reserved solid for much of the year. May sees the islands largest gathering of temporary visitors, as the annual gig-racing champions bring spectators intrigued by the 19th century vessels used by the competing teams.

____________________________________________________________________________________
Mexico City, Mexico

Mexico was hammered by bad press in 2008 and 2009. First the drug-related violence in a few border towns was blown out of proportion in the U.S., the number one source of tourists. Then swine flu hit, and everyone blamed Mexico. On top of that, the global financial crisis meant that Americans who were snapping up second homes in resort areas realized their home equity lines of credit were now dry. Mexico City responded by doing well what it’s done well for over four centuries: by serving as the crossroads for Mexico and highlighting its best assets: top museums, amazing archaeology, and perhaps the best food of any city in North America.

____________________________________________________________________________________

Budapest

Budapest was made for travel. Hundreds of thermal springs feed public baths and spa hotels around the city, offering endless ways to while away chilly winter days. Plenty of indoor shopping and sightseeing add to the appeal. This winter, air-and-hotel packages offer the best value, though airfare sales and generally reasonable hotel rates provide affordable options as well. And since Hungary isn’t yet using the euro, it tends to be less expensive than many other European countries.

____________________________________________________________________________________

Hawaii (the Big Island), United States

Few tourist destinations in the United States have been hurt during the current recession as badly as Hawaii. As hotels and resorts struggle to come up with smart deals, we’re looking beyond the lei-wrapped packages this year to the islands’ most quintessential Hawaiian destination — especially to Hawaiians. In place of vacant beach-front high rises visitors are greeted by a wealth of options for water sports, hiking, cycling, diving, and golf. It’s an island of extremes, from its size (the biggest of the chain), to its age (the youngest), to its population (the smallest), to its natural wonders (highest peaks, most active volcanoes, glacial lakes, and snow). The beauty isn’t of the white sand beach variety (the sand is black here after all), but rather the look of a destination that’s survived relatively untouched –just the way it should be.

____________________________________________________________________________________

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

While all the focus has been on its neighbor Dubai, Abu Dhabi, the capital of the seven city-states that make up the United Arab Emirates, has pursued similar global playground goals, but with more restraint and focus. Which is why when Dubai cried “uncle” to its creditors in late November, everyone looked to Abu Dhabi to help set it straight. This fiscal crisis will give the world the opportunity to see how a gulf state that didn’t spend all its money on indoor ski resorts and a palm tree-shaped island can weather a crisis. For travelers — especially business ones — it will be the year that defines whether Abu Dhabi will be a flash in the pan or the next serious entrant on the global stage. In our guidebook to the region we said, “Abu Dhabi can seem a little slow and perhaps even a bit boring. But its beaches are just as beautiful, there’s less traffic and more greenery, and the character is distinctly Emirati, preserving much of the conservative heritage that its northeastern neighbor has begun to toss off.”

____________________________________________________________________________________

Tunisia

While northern Tunisia is a hot spot for European tourists, it’s still new to Americans, who tend to visit Morocco instead. Tunisia — and especially the areas around the capital Tunis — are a microcosm of North Africa’s charms: Islamic culture mixed with Mediterranean spirit and beauty, modern colonial remnants from the French and ancient colonial remnants from the Romans. The capital Tunis has the best of both local architecture, exemplified by its sprawling and bustling medina, and colonial remnants of wide boulevards and straight lanes that stretch eastward from the Porte de France.

____________________________________________________________________________________
Copenhagen, Denmark

Denmark’s capital rarely gets the attention it deserves, so it’s been quietly focused on sensible city planning with comprehensive bicycle paths, free bikes, and a new metro line in the works to deal with the expanding city center. Residents are also trying on a host of new public buildings — an opera house, a cutting-edge library, and a concert hall — and an environmental program that’s turning the rest of Europe green with envy. And despite the often gloomy northern climate, residents are routinely rated as some of the happiest people in the world. They’ll have the opportunity to show off their city when it hosts the COP 15 Climate Change Conference in December 2009, a high-profile, international assembly of politicians looking for ways to reduce greenhouse emissions. They won’t have to look much further than the host city for compelling ideas.

____________________________________________________________________________________

St. Lucia

Among Caribbean islands, St. Lucia has always retained an upscale, romantic allure. This winter though, you don’t need to splurge on a honeymoon to enjoy the best of the island. The rough economy brought prices down this year, and new low-cost carrier service has put St. Lucia within reach of more travelers.

For most travelers to Italy, Rome is the furthest south they will travel. The golden triangle encompassing Rome, Venice and Florence is the main route. But the south has so much to offer! The regions of the south include, Lazio and within it Rome and Vatican city, Abruzzo, Molise and Puglia along the Adriatic, Naples and Campania, the toe of the boot Basilicata and Calabria, and the island of Sicily.

Lazio is a region of lakes, mountains, and vineyards. Formed by the eruption of four volcanoes and has left the region with numerous hot springs and volcanic crater lakes. Lazio’s best beaches can be found in the Parco Nazionale del Circeo between Gaeta and Sabaudia.

Rome is the largest city in Lazio, a city known the world over for its history and beauty. Some of the wonderful sights of Rome are the Colosseum , constructed in 80 AD; St Peter’s Basilica whose dome was painted by Michelangelo; the Pantheon, built between 118 and 125 AD; Piazza Navona, one of Bernini’s finest works and so much more.

Naples, the capital of Campania, is an ancient city founded by the Greeks but conquered by the Normans, the French, Spanish and more. A few of the sights you might want to visit while there are Castel Capuano and Porta Capuana. The Castle was a royal palace until 1540 when it was transformed into the Court of Justice. The nearby Puerta Capuanais the finest Renaissance gateway in Italy. The Duomo was built between 1294 and 1323. The Museo Archeologico Nazionale is one of the world’s most important archeological museums in the world. Nearby is the petrified city of Pompeii buried in ash by the 79 AD eruption of Mt. Vesuvius.

The Amalfi coast is a real tourist draw because of the beautiful hill towns such as Sorrento, Praiano, Amalfi and Positano, the enchanting views of the Mediterranean and the Ile of Capri, just a ferry-boat ride away. Ravello offers the best views along this winding cliff-side drive.
Abruzzo, Molise and Puglia are the three regions forming a long strip along the Adriatic Sea. Dominated by the Apennine mountain range, this region has the contrasts of the Gran Sasso peak at 9554 ft. and The Adriatic sea’s glorious beaches. L’Aquila, Abruzzo’s capital lies at the foot of the Gran Sasso. Outdoor lovers are intrigued by the Parco Nazionale d’ Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise. This park is one of Europe’s most important nature preserves . This park is open for hiking, trekking and climbing.

Bari, Puglia’s capital, a port city with ferries to Croatia and Greece is enhanced by the nearby Castle Del Monte, a UNESCO site. Alberobello is distinguished by the number of Trulli within its borders. Trulli are little, circular, white-washed buildings that have conical roofs. The origin of these buildings is obscure, but are interesting historically. Lecce is home to the Lecce Baroque style architecture mastered by Giuseppe and Antonio Zimbalo . Some examples can be found in the Chiesa de Rosario, the Palazzo Vescovile and Duomo, and the Santa Croce.

One of the poorest regions of Italy, Basilicata and Calabrismatera form the toe of the “Italian Boot”. Scattered with Greek ruins, and isolated towns, this region is almost virgin territory for tourists. Matera offers fantastic views from its perch atop a cliff. The Sassi section, below the bustling city, was once home to Materan cave dwellers. Tropea is one of a string of unspoiled, picturesque towns along the Mediterranean.

Sicily was a crossroads from Africa and Europe and has retained customs from the many cultures that crossed its path. Mt Etna has provided the fertile land that gives this island agricultural abundance. Tourism is still relatively low, so lovers of history and rich Italian cuisine should put Sicily travel on their short-list.

Palermo is an exotic city worth exploring. A few of the many main sights are the Duomo, Palazzo Reale, La Mangione, and Villa Guilia. The Duomo at Monreale with its glorious mosaica is one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in Sicily. The Port of Marsala evokes memories of the sweet wine that has been produced here since the 18th century.

Taormina is one of Sicily’s most visited resorts. The well-preserved Greek Theater offers magnificent views of Mt Etna. Siracusa, former Greek stronghold is filled with Greek temples and artifacts. The Museo de Archeologico Regionale Paolo Orsi has important artifacts from the Paleolithic to Byzantine eras.

So when you consider your travel plans to Italy, don’t forget about the REST of Italy.

Safe Travels

By law, any hotel stay within 5 miles of a beach requires at least one 15-minute toe-dipping session. But keeping an eye on pocketfuls of accumulated travel crud (hotel keys, credit card, crumpled $20 bills) usually results in a less-than relaxing experience, with constant glances back at your towel to make sure no one has found your genius hiding space—under the towel. Stash sandals are comfortable enough to wear on the beach, but their real utility is as a mobile safe. The secret tray in the sole slides out to hold personal items and slides back in to make sure no one knows they’re there. It’s something Q might have cooked up if Bond ever decided to take up surfing.
Price: $28.95
Indispensable in the airline fees era, the Balanzza Digital Luggage Scale could save you hundreds (yes, hundreds) of dollars in surprise baggage fees at the airport. Weigh your luggage before you go, and again before your trip home to make sure all those gifts and souvenirs you picked up on vacation don’t send your baggage costs into the next stratosphere.
There’s nothing comfortable about the distinct lack of legroom in coach class these days. But while we can’t do much about the seat pitch on most commercial flights, we can point out the benefits of TravelSox. These “gradual compression socks” stimulate blood flow and reduce the risk of swelling and fatigue brought on by sitting in cramped conditions.
Price: $29.85
